People once used unicycles fitted with footpads at the sides as personal transport, alongside ebikes, electric scooters and electric skateboards. They looked fun, but many commuters ultimately moved on.

City streets may not suit them, but rugged trails might. That seems to be the bet behind the InMotion Adventure.

It is probably the most powerful electric unicycle we have seen. InMotion says it can handle trails and backcountry terrain, and even tackle steep climbs that personal transporters rarely attempt.

The company claims it can go up 50-degree slopes. That sounds ridiculous, and more than a little scary.

    Motor and Speed

A C40 magnetic steel motor drives the Adventure. It is rated at 4000W with a peak power of 9,000W, an absurd figure for a one-wheel self-balancing ride.

Per InMotion, torque reaches 147.5 pound-feet, along with a traction force of 850N at the wheel. Those numbers should explain how it manages steep inclines.

On level ground, it reaches a top speed of 68.35 mph. Getting from a stop to 30 mph takes only about 2.5 seconds. Riding it may not even be allowed in your city.

Two riding modes are available. Comfort delivers a smooth, stable power response, while Sport raises the acceleration response by 47 percent.

    Balance and Suspension

Like other electric unicycles, it balances itself. Vector control, posture detection and motor control all come from built-in algorithms, so it stays upright even on treacherous ground.

The double suspension system pairs suspension sliders on the sides with a coil suspension in the rear. Stiffness is 600 pound per inch up front and 970 pounds per inch in the rear.

Damping is adjustable too. Compression damping offers 17 levels, and rebound damping has eight.

In short, this thing soaks up a lot of impact. Your knees avoid the jarring ride you would otherwise get from fast descents, hops over rocks and other rough off-road stretches.

InMotion adds that the suspension can be tuned to suit the rider’s weight and riding preferences.

    Tires, Batteries and Other Features

The Adventure rides on a high-traction off-road tire whose treads suit loose terrain like sand, gravel and dirt. Larger, wider anti-slip foot plates help keep you on top of the unicycle, most of the time anyway.

Four battery modules power it, and each one mounts with a quick-release design. You can pull them out easily and swap in fresh modules when needed.

A smart battery monitoring system is included, along with faster charging. With a maximum current of 16A, it can reach an 80 percent charge inside an hour.

The IPX6 waterproof rating keeps it viable for riding in any weather. For lighting, you get 1,500 lumen headlights with an adjustable angle, plus an automotive-grade tail light.
